Read Judges 20

Scripture- Judges 20:46-48- So that day the tribe of Benjamin lost 25,000 strong warriors armed with swords, leaving only 600 men who escaped to the rock of Rimmon, where they lived for four months. And the Israelites returned and slaughtered every living thing in all the towns—the people, the livestock, and everything they found. They also burned down all the towns they came to.

Observations- This story represents one of the many low chapters in the story of Israel during the time of the judges when everyone chose to do what was right in their own eyes with only passing interest in God’s will and no sense of deep community among the various tribes of the nation. The man who stirred up the spirit of revenge didn’t, for instance, bother to mention his own role in handing over the women to be raped by the men from the tribe of Benjamin. The consequence of their many sins (for everyone involved) was even more sinning as the level of violence (and the evil actions that preceded it) and destruction was off the charts.

Application- What an awful story designed to highlight the ongoing and deeply painful consequences of doing whatever we want to do whenever we want to do it. In Luke 13:34 Jesus cried out, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God’s messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me.” I suspect this is the kind of grief God must have felt when He watched the children of His promise behave in such a way. The clear lesson for us is to seek to have Christ be the center of our lives, not pushed to the edges as an afterthought.

Prayer- Dear God, help me to actively seek You and Your best with all that is within me! I want You more than I want my own way, but I know all too well that there are still times when I am my own worst enemy. Help me cooperate fully with You in my battle with the unholy trinity of selfishness, ego, and demanding my own way. I want to live in a manner that will fully express the gratitude I feel for the grace I have received in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

“Don't become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what He wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.” (Romans 12:2- The Message),

Read Judges 18

Scripture- Judges 18:30-31- Then they set up the carved image, and they appointed Jonathan son of Gershom, son of Moses (obviously a different man named Moses), as their priest. This family continued as priests for the tribe of Dan until the Exile. So Micah’s carved image was worshiped by the tribe of Dan as long as the Tabernacle of God remained at Shiloh.

Observations- The tribe of Dan was assigned their portion of land to inhabit under the leadership of Joshua, but they failed to seize the initiative and possess the land long ago. In taking control of the town of Laish and setting up spiritual shop with their own disobedient priest complete with carved idols in direct violation of God’s Word, they hadn’t sought or received God’s guidance for any of their actions. To many people observing their worship and practice, it would have looked quite similar- on the surface- to the authentic faith lived out by many of their ancestors, but they weren’t highly invested in honoring God; rather they did things their own way.

Application- Jesus said to the Samaritan woman at the well: “But the time is coming- indeed it’s here now- when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship Him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:23-24) The tribe of Dan settled for worshiping and practicing their faith apart from the spirit of God and in falsehood. They wanted a personal priest to say what they wanted to hear. They wanted to set up idols, even though that was clearly not in line with God’s command. As we seek to experience God in worship and as we practice (that is, try to get better through training) our faith, are we focused on discovering God’s truth in the power of His spirit or getting what we want when we want it?

Prayer- Dear Lord, I don’t want to be “faithful enough” (whatever that even means!) or worshiping You outside of Your Spirit happy in my own personal preferences as a part of nice religious club. I don’t want to be guilty of serving like this priest with the tribe of Dan purely for personal gain, and I don’t ever want to serve a church that is pleased with doing things without seeking You through Your Word, in prayer, and by connecting with one another. Empower me to point people to the power of Your Word to help Your people worship and do life with You in Spirit and Truth. It’s all about You, Jesus. Amen.

Scripture- Judges 17:5-6- Micah set up a shrine for the idol, and he made a sacred ephod and some household idols. Then he installed one of his sons as his personal priest. In those days Israel had no king; all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes.

Observations- Micah (not the Old Testament prophet!) engaged in religious behavior that he thought would be a way to honor God. The actions he took, however, weren’t in line with God’s Word; instead he was busy doing his own thing in his own way by crafting household idols. He was even able to hire a personal priest who chose to violate his sacred duty- in all likelihood because worshiping God as Moses had directed had fallen on hard times and the Israelites failed to give generously to support and sustain the priesthood. This moral decline may have seemed harmless, but it represented a disregard for their holy God.

Application- Many times we simply want God to bless whatever it is we want to do. Do we ever act like Micah by engaging in outwardly religious behavior that doesn’t actually honor God? Micah wasn’t truly interested or invested in getting to know God or do life in the way that God directed in His Word; rather he made his own path and believed God should have been thrilled with his efforts. It would be better to set out to know the God revealed in the Bible and check with Him about the next course of action. Our job is not to “do whatever seems right in our own eyes,” but to learn and do what is right in God’s eyes.

Prayer- O God, it seems there is often times a way that seems so right to us, but is actually full of our wanting what we want when we want it. Transform our desires, so that what we want is in line with what You so much want to give us! Help us say “No!” to all the tempting false idols that look like such great ideas in our weakest moments. We want to do life with Christ and honor Him by doing the next right thing on the basis of Your Word and in Your perfect timing. I pray for Your church to pay careful attention to Your Word, and not merely what seems right in our own eyes. We thank You that Jesus is our perfect High Priest to usher us into Your presence. Amen.

“So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe.”

(Hebrews 4:14),

Read Judges 16

Scripture- Judges 16:28-30- Then Samson prayed to the LORD, “Sovereign LORD, remember me again. O God, please strengthen me just one more time. With one blow let me pay back the Philistines for the loss of my two eyes.” Then Samson put his hands on the two center pillars that held up the temple. Pushing against them with both hands, he prayed, “Let me die with the Philistines.” And the temple crashed down on the Philistine rulers and all the people. So he killed more people when he died than he had during his entire lifetime.

Observations- Samson died as he lived- focused on what he most wanted- in this case revenge against the Philistines for having his eyes gouged out. Even though he had been set apart to serve God and been given incredible gifts to lead the people and bless God, Samson chose to primarily fulfill his own oversized appetites. He made particularly bad decisions as it related to the opposite sex (his first wife, prostitutes he visited, and, of course, Delilah) and paid a high price for his choices.

Application- We remember Samson as a uniquely talented man who squandered his abilities from God and never came close to living up to his full potential. What are you good at doing, and how are you using these gifts to glorify God and point others to Jesus Christ? How will you be remembered? I’d rather be known as someone who made the most of my limited gifts by cooperating with God than as someone who failed to live into the many gifts I had. God was with Samson in powerful ways, but he took that for granted and didn’t become the leader God intended. How are taking God for granted?

Prayer- (from St. Fursa- 9^th century) May the yoke of the law of God be upon your shoulder,
The coming of the Holy Spirit on your head,
The sign of Christ on your forehead,
The hearing of the Holy Spirit in your ears,
The smelling of the Holy Spirit in your nose,
The vision that the people of heaven have in your eyes,
The speech of the people of heaven in your mouth,
The work of the Church of God in your hands,
The good of God and of the neighbor in your feet.
May God dwell in your heart and may you belong entirely to God the Father. Amen.

Read Judges 15

Scripture- Judges 15:16-17- Then Samson said, “With the jawbone of a donkey, I’ve piled them in heaps! With the jawbone of a donkey, I’ve killed a thousand men!” When he finished his boasting, he threw away the jawbone; and the place was named Jawbone Hill.

Observations- Samson was merely motivated by the power of personal vengeance to take action against the Philistine father and daughter who had betrayed him. His rage knew no bounds and in spite of himself and his lack of concern for how he could bless and please God, the Spirit of God still showed up to help Samson defeat his enemies. He was a one man wrecking crew, and when it was all over, he took all of the credit for what he’d accomplished with God’s help. He backed off his boasting in the next verse in his exhaustion and thirst, but we get another glimpse into lack of character development in the life of Samson. Still, however, God was with him and he served as the judge of Israel for 20 years.

Application- It’s painful to see someone like Samson fail to use the gifts God gave him to their fullest. Can you imagine what his life could have been like had he chosen to genuinely cooperate with the Spirit of God at work in and through him? Even though he had been brought up to serve God, Samson chose to take whatever he wanted for himself and he played the ego card freely. It’s important for us not to take for granted the work of God in each one of us, too. Jesus told His disciples and tells us even now, “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5) Abide in Christ and give thanks for His work in you!

Prayer- Dear God, thank You for the gifts and graces You have given me. Help me to never take them or Your work through me for granted. Guide and bless Your church as we stay open to the remarkable and miraculous ways You will work through us if we’ll just open our minds, hearts, and eyes to Your activity among us. Help us to avoid being driven by personal vengeance. Help us avoid the egotistical dangers portrayed in the attitudes and behaviors of Samson, a man with mighty gifts who squandered them. We want to be open and available to be used by the Holy Spirit to glorify Christ. Amen.

Scripture- Judges 14:1-2- One day when Samson was in Timnah, one of the Philistine women caught his eye. When he returned home, he told his father and mother, “A young Philistine woman in Timnah caught my eye. I want to marry her. Get her for me.”

Observations- We are introduced to the many character flaws in the Spirit empowered Samson such as impulsiveness, selfishness, arrogance, disregard for God’s law, not receiving the wise counsel of his parents as it related to his choice for a wife, and failing to truly honor the Spirit of God ready to work through him on behalf of the nation of Israel. Samson wanted what he wanted when he wanted it, and he didn’t much seem to care about developing his leadership gifts in the best possible way to honor God and serve people. As we read chapter 14, we get the sense that the story of Samson won’t end well.

Application- The Bible points out many cautionary tales for our benefit and to maximize God’s work in us. We get to learn from the mistakes of others who have gone before us in the faith, and Samson’s story certainly invites us to consider making different choices than he made; that is, to nurture thoughtfulness, service to others, humility, honoring our parents, and taking very seriously the fact that the Holy Spirit has come and made a home in us. How will you honor the Spirit’s presence in your life today and everyday?

Prayer- Dear Lord, thank You for the precious gift of life. Help me to not take becoming a better disciple of Jesus so lightly, but allow me the privilege of honoring the work of the Holy Spirit within me. I don’t want Samson’s story to be my story or the story of Your church, so help us live thoughtfully, humbly, responsibly, and honorably with and for Jesus Christ. Working with You to develop my gifts and graces, take my character flaws and reduce their impact through Your transforming power, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Read Judges 13

Scripture- Judges 13:1, 24-25 - Again the Israelites did evil in the LORD’s sight, so the LORD handed them over to the Philistines, who oppressed them for forty years. When her son was born, she named him Samson. And the LORD blessed him as he grew up. And the Spirit of the LORD began to stir him while he lived in Mahaneh-dan, which is located between the towns of Zorah and Eshtaol.

Observations- Again the common refrain of Judges begins a new chapter in the story of the Israelites and their movement from faithfulness to disobedience and back again. Of course, Samson’s life would serve as another cautionary tale about the dangers of drifting far from God, disregarding God’s truth, and failing to honor His laws, but the story started out with such promise and hope as the Lord blessed Samson and he began to feel the stirring of God’s Spirit within him to be an honorable judge and defeat the oppression of the Philistines.

Application- It’s powerful and wonderful to feel the Spirit of Lord stirring within us! I look back on such early stirrings in my own life that occurred for me at a very young age, but that I set aside and disregarded. I intentionally chose not to discover the meaning of what seemed to be stirring within me. I don’t want to ever be guilty of that again, especially since I’ve stepped over the line of faith and have put my stake in the ground and said, “Here I stand. I’m a follower of Jesus. I can do no other!” What is God nudging you to do next? The Holy Spirit promises to keep stirring within us even now, for “God has given each of you a gift from His great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.” (1 Peter 4:10)

Prayer- Dear God, please let Your Holy Spirit stir within me to do whatever it is You have in store for me to accomplish next with Your help and guidance. Light a fire in my bones, and help me stoke the flames of Your love, so that fire doesn’t ever go out. Light a fire in Your Church as well, so that as we grow in our faith in Christ, we are ever more ready to serve Christ and others joyfully with our hearts, hands, and minds. Speak, Lord, for Your servants are listening! Amen.

Scripture- Judges 12:8-10- After Jephthah died, Ibzan from Bethlehem judged Israel. He had thirty sons and thirty daughters. He sent his daughters to marry men outside his clan, and he brought in thirty young women from outside his clan to marry his sons. Ibzan judged Israel for seven years. When he died, he was buried at Bethlehem.

Observations- The next 3 judges ruled over Israel for 25 years, but very little was recorded about them. While something of note, for instance, must have occurred during the reign of Ibzan, we don’t get to know what it was- perhaps things were very peaceful or there just wasn’t all that much that seemed significant enough to bother writing down. The Israelites were big on marking memories and discerning what could be learned from the lives of others, but not so much here. Did God’s Spirit make a home in Ibzan in a powerful way? Did he guide the people with integrity and grace? We don’t get to know the legacy of Izban for his story wasn’t recorded.

Application- What’s your story? Who will be in charge of writing it? What would you want others to remember and give thanks for in your life? The great thing is that our story isn’t over- it’s still being written and the pen is in our hands (or our fingers are on the keyboard). We can choose not to care about our story and go through life without a clear sense of purpose. We can choose to let others write our story or not write it in the case of Izban. We can avoid the issue altogether and not care about our legacy. Or we can choose to invite God into our story to see what we will write together. Remembering is a key spiritual discipline for followers of Jesus: “For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord Himself. On the night when He was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then He broke it in pieces and said, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me.’ In the same way, He took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and His people- an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this to remember me as often as you drink it.’” (1 Corinthians 11:23-25)

Prayer- Lord, You have invited us to be on our journey of life with You and called us, as Your children, to be reliable, steadfast, and faithful. Help us be representatives of Your love and grace in ways that are memorable and delight You. We will have an influence- good, bad, or unmemorable- in the lives of the people we encounter. Help us know what a privilege it is to got to love and serve You and to be given the joyful responsibility to love and serve others. What will my legacy be, O God? What will the legacy of this church be, Jesus? I pray the stories yet to be written will bring You honor and glory, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

He causes us to remember His wonderful works. How gracious and merciful is our Lord! (Psalm 111:4),

Scripture- Judges 11:29-31- At that time the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he went throughout the land of Gilead and Manasseh, including Mizpah in Gilead, and from there he led an army against the Ammonites. And Jephthah made a vow to the LORD. He said, “If you give me victory over the Ammonites, I will give to the LORD whatever comes out of my house to meet me when I return in triumph. I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering.”

Observations- The story of Jephthah starts so well- sort of an opposite result the evil Abimelech perpetrated on his family (he killed all of his half brothers to clear the way for him to be a king) and in Israel (he ruled without integrity- no surprise given how he consolidated power). Jephthah was called back to lead the people after have been sent away in shame. He leads well and brings victory to Israel, but he was rash and impulsive in making a stupid vow to God to sacrifice the first living thing to come greet him upon returning home victorious. Did he never consider his one and only child, his daughter, might be the one to come and greet him, not a goat or sheep?

Application- Jephthah made a deal with God that God, through the Word He had already spoken to His chosen people, found detestable, so it would have been far more reasonable and honorable for Jephthah to have repented of his stupid and impulsive vow to God than follow through with such an evil act. This is a story that reminds us to be careful about the commitments we make to God, and that two wrongs don’t make a right. Pagan human sacrifices may have been common, but they were forbidden in Israelite culture. Jesus reminds us, “And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple. But don’t begin until you count the cost.” (Luke 14:27-28) As His followers we don’t sacrifice others on the altar of expediency; rather we freely choose to make sacrifices that honor the One we call Lord.

Prayer- (a prayer by Eugene Peterson) “Dear Lord Jesus, Help me to come to You with each and every mess I have made, Regardless how large or how small, How trivial or how terrible. Help me to realize who I am – a sinner, Still, after all these years, after all these tears, still a sinner.

And help me to realize who you are – a Savior, Still at the right hand of the Father, interceding for us, still a Savior. Still loving me, still forgiving me, Still taking the shattered pieces of the things I’ve dropped, Gathering me into Your loving arms And making me whole again.” Amen.

Read Judges 10

Scripture- Judges 10:6- Again the Israelites did evil in the Lord’s sight. They served the images of Baal and Ashtoreth, and the gods of Aram, Sidon, Moab, Ammon, and Philistia. They abandoned the Lord and no longer served Him at all.

Observations- For 45 years Tola and Jair had served as judges on behalf of Israel, and I suspect it was probably a rather uneventful period of time as no highly negative or remarkably positive memories were recorded for future generations. Once again, however, the Israelites then “did evil in the Lord’s sight” and wandered off to worship and serve other gods with very different moral codes and traditions. How does such wandering get started, gain a foothold in so many people’s lives long enough to become a trend, and eventually lead to everyone abandoning any commitment to God whatsoever?

Application- It’s always easier to drift into bad habits and negative attachments than it is to build a pathway to good habits and best practices of following Jesus. Coasting, drifting, and wandering aimlessly through life will always take significantly less effort than making a commitment to honor God by following Jesus and committing our attitudes and behaviors to an ongoing process of transformation. How will we keep building our relationship with Christ, so the possibility of our drifting away from Him and God’s best for our lives becomes less and less likely?

Prayer- (the 4^th verse of the hymn “Come Thou of Every Blessing”)

O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let Thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to Thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above.

“I have wandered away like a lost sheep; come and find me, for I have not forgotten Your commands.” (Psalm 119:176),

Scripture- Judges 9:16-18- Jotham continued, “Now make sure you have acted honorably and in good faith by making Abimelech your king, and that you have done right by Gideon and all of his descendants. Have you treated him with the honor he deserves for all he accomplished? For he fought for you and risked his life when he rescued you from the Midianites. But today you have revolted against my father and his descendants, killing his seventy sons on one stone. And you have chosen his slave woman’s son, Abimelech, to be your king just because he is your relative.”

Observations- In the previous chapter the birth of Abimelech, which was the result of a moral failing on the part of Gideon, was acknowledged, but not given a lot of attention. Here, however, we find the way Gideon missed the mark of God’s full intention for his life taking on a life of its own in the cruelty and evil of Abimelech as he killed all 70 of his half-brothers (with the exception of Jotham) in order to solidify his position as king. God hadn’t yet relented to the Israelites desire to have a king, and Abimelech certainly didn’t have the character and integrity that would honor the Lord.

Application- Abimelech was certainly a man of action who took matters into his own hands without regard to what God wanted, the best interest of God’s people, or God’s graceful limits. When we are tired of the way a particular situation is playing out and decide to take matters “into our own hands,” it would be wise to make sure we are in line with God’s best for our lives. We don’t bring our plans to God and say, “Bless this!” Impulsive action for the sake of action isn’t in itself good; rather our plans should be submitted to God to discern what He thinks. Before that we should have been consulting with God and others about the development of the plan.

Prayer- Dear Lord, thank You for the many reminders from Your Word for me to not move forward without consulting You and a lot of people I trust to have Your best interest at heart. Scripture- Judges 8:33-35- As soon as Gideon died, the Israelites prostituted themselves by worshiping the images of Baal, making Baal-berith their god. They forgot the LORD their God, who had rescued them from all their enemies surrounding them. Nor did they show any loyalty to the family of Jerub-baal (that is, Gideon), despite all the good he had done for Israel.

Observations- And the pattern of God raising up a leader, a judge, to guide the people to be faithful to the Lord and live victoriously continued. While Gideon still lived, the people had a respect for God and generally sought to live in way that reflected the character of God (with noted exceptions like bowing down before golden ephod, or worship garment, and Gideon’s own moral failure of having a son with a concubine). It wasn’t long after Gideon died, however, that the people drifted away the monotheistic (one God) tradition of Israel and toward the polytheistic and idolatrous beliefs of their neighbors.

Application- What level of loyalty do we owe to God on the basis of what He has done in our lives? Given that He’s “saved a wretch like me,” I get to stay very close to my need for Christ, and I will always owe God a far greater level of loyalty than I am able to effectively live out. The Israelites (and even Gideon) started back to their pattern of drifting away from God and toward other gods before Gideon died, but once he was gone they experienced the bondage of their freedom to do as they pleased beyond the graceful limits of their loving Father. As followers of Jesus, we freely choose to be restrained in our attitudes and behavior by a holy God, who wants the very best for us.

Prayer- (by Richard Foster) I pray today, Jesus, for Your bride, the Church. It must hurt You to see all our sin and rebellion; All our fighting and backbiting. It’s presumptuous to think we can ever enter the ache of Your heart for Your children. Even so, we can repent of our sins and the sins of our people. We have scorned You in so many ways: for prostituting our integrity for the sake of personal advantage, Forgive us O Lord; For loving our structures more than Your Church, Forgive us O Lord; For disregarding those who are precious to You, Forgive us O Lord; For working as if we are the ones in charge, Forgive us O Lord. Forgive. Heal. Restore. Amen.

Scripture- Judges 7:2-3- The LORD said to Gideon, “You have too many warriors with you. If I let all of you fight the Midianites, the Israelites will boast to me that they saved themselves by their own strength. Therefore, tell the people, ‘Whoever is timid or afraid may leave this mountain and go home.’” So 22,000 of them went home, leaving only 10,000 who were willing to fight.

Observations- I suspect that Gideon, “the mighty warrior,” must have been scratching his head as the Lord commanded him to sift his forces way down from the 32,000 he had been able to gather together to fight the enemies that were oppressing them. God wasn’t finished sifting, for 10,000 soldiers was still way too many. 300 brave men was just right, so that the people of God could be clear He was the Author of their victory. God didn’t want them thinking they had been able to accomplish the task in their own ingenuity and strength.

Application- I love it when God surprises me by doing far more than I had ever been able to think or imagine in my own mind. God doesn’t merely want us to be OK with our lives; rather He wants us to experience all kinds of incredible things that He can do through us. God longs for us to know His power flowing into our lives, so that we can shine a light on Jesus in His world. When we want to get all of the credit for something, regardless of how well things might go, we can be sure God had bigger and better plans for us to accomplish; that is, if we’d just been able to get out of His way. Remember God’s Word to Paul: “My grace is enough; it's all you need. My strength comes into its own in your weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9- The Message)

Prayer- Dear God, I pray for You to be my Guide and Friend along the way of this life. I’m so grateful to get to spend eternity in Your presence, and that I get to start practicing that reality here and now. I thank You for the strengths and abilities You have given me to use to point people to Jesus and accomplish much for Your Kingdom, but help me remember that apart from Christ I can do nothing of lasting and real value. If I operate in my own power, I’ll accomplish less, be full of myself, and fail to do life in Your Spirit. Help me, help Your Church, get this right as we submit to You. Amen.

Scripture- Judges 6:12-13, 27, 39- The angel of the LORD appeared to him and said, “Mighty hero, the LORD is with you!” “Sir,” Gideon replied, “if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all the miracles our ancestors told us about? Didn’t they say, ‘The LORD brought us up out of Egypt’? But now the LORD has abandoned us and handed us over to the Midianites.” So Gideon took ten of his servants and did as the LORD had commanded. But he did it at night because he was afraid of the other members of his father’s household and the people of the town. Then Gideon said to God, “Please don’t be angry with me, but let me make one more request…”

Observations- This chapter is filled with many different reflection points surrounding the call from God and the actions of Gideon: the irony of the angel referring to Gideon as “Mighty hero!” as he huddles in fear and solitude to avoid being found out as he threshes his wheat away from all the wind that could blow away the chaff, his lack of understanding in verse 13 that the people’s disobedience led to the predicament they were in, using the cover of night to hide the tearing down his father’s altar to Baal and Asherah pole, or his request for repeated signs from God about moving forward with God’s call in his life. Gideon’s is a story of reluctant, but faithful service to God and the community of faith.

Application- I love the story of Gideon, because there is nothing larger than life about him. It’s pretty clear that he is a “reluctant hero,” who tried his best to stay in the background and not make waves, but he did follow through with the unique call of God for his life. Gideon is a great example of what Paul heard the Lord say to him about his own life in 2 Corinthians 12:9: “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” Gideon serves not as a model for us (perfect love, Christ says, casts out fear and asking God for signs and then asking for another sign isn’t such a good idea!), but we get to see a picture of God’s faithfulness and ability to use whomever He calls to accomplish His will. You and I may not feel like “Mighty heroes,” but if God says it, it’s true!

Prayer- Dear God, help me learn how to see myself as You see me. If you can declare Gideon to be a “mighty hero” while he’s hiding in fear from his enemies and feeling like the least likely person to do anything of significance in his family, then You can see more in us than we can see in ourselves. Let Your power be on full display in all of my many weaknesses! I pray for Your Church to move into the future You have in store for us with faith, hope, and love, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Scripture- Judges 5:6-9 (The Message) - In the time of Shamgar son of Anath, and in the time of Jael, Public roads were abandoned, travelers went by backroads. Warriors became fat and sloppy, no fight left in them. Then you, Deborah, rose up; you got up, a mother in Israel. God chose new leaders, who then fought at the gates. And not a shield or spear to be seen among the forty companies of Israel. Lift your hearts high, O Israel, with abandon, volunteering yourselves with the people—bless God!

Observations- Whenever Israel drifting away from God and into idolatry, they become far less focused on their life together as a community of faith and far more invested in serving other gods and themselves. Being overtaken by outside forces was a natural consequence from this lack of vigilance about the future and not focusing on the development of strong moral character as individuals and a people. In this worship song for God’s people, we see that God selected a woman, Deborah, with great wisdom, impeccable character, and the ability to inspire and motivate all of Israel to work together toward defeating a common foe, which was not only the enemy from the outside, but also their own moral lethargy.

Application- What do we need to do when we drift into being spiritually and morally lazy (or as Eugene Petersen translates it- “fat and sloppy”)? There are always unintended and unforeseen natural consequences when we don’t take our moral and spiritual development seriously. Hopefully, God will raise up a leader in our lives like Deborah who can inspire us to pursue being better disciples who are deeply concerned about making more disciples. Jesus tells us to count the cost of our commitment (Luke 14:25-34) to being disciples who belong to Him, but we must also recognize the huge cost of not being a lifelong learner on the way with Jesus.

Prayer- (by Howard Thurman) Lord, I want to be more holy in my heart. Here is the citadel of all my desiring, where my hopes are born and all the deep resolutions of my spirit take wings. In this center, my fears are nourished, and all my hates are nurtured. Here my loves are cherished, and all the deep hungers of my spirit are honored without quivering and without shock. In my heart, above all else, let love and integrity envelop me until my love is perfected and the last vestige of my desiring is no longer in conflict with thy Spirit. Lord, I want to be more holy in my heart. Amen.

Scripture- Judges 4:6b-8- She said to him, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, commands you: Call out 10,000 warriors from the tribes of Naphtali and Zebulun at Mount Tabor. And I will call out Sisera, commander of Jabin’s army, along with his chariots and warriors, to the Kishon River. There I will give you victory over him.” Barak told her, “I will go, but only if you go with me.”

Observations- What was the motivation behind Barak’s desire for Deborah, the judge of Israel, to go with him into battle? Was he someone who worried a lot about the outcome of confronting this enemy or did he simply have such a high level of respect for her leadership? Was he counting too much on human leadership and not enough on God or was he believing God would be uniquely at work through Deborah? Either way Barak was in fact choosing to be faithful to Deborah and God’s call to serve and he wasn’t worried about receiving glory for himself.

Application- We need people who are willing to make the journey of faith with us. God doesn’t want us to be alone as work to accomplish His will and fulfill His calling in our lives. The fact is we will accomplish more together than we will on our own. Paul said in Romans 12:4-5, “Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.” As God’s people with plenty of baggage, we don’t run from our need for help and encouragement from the Body of Christ; rather we confidently run toward one another.

Prayer- (a prayer by Ulrich Zwingli- church reformer who lived from 1484-1531) Almighty, eternal and merciful God, whose Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path, open and illuminate our minds, that we may purely and perfectly understand thy Word and that our lives may be conformed to what we have rightly understood, that in nothing we may be displeasing unto thy majesty, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

P. S. – In case you missed the news: Talent Challenge Update- We received $27,258 from our Talent Challenge and Christmas Eve Offering. Praise God! Because of your faith, generosity and hard work, we will be able to partner with our sister church in Holeta Ethiopia to build a very nice latrine and shower facility benefitting 400 children and 200 adults. And, because God blessed our efforts far above our own expectations, we are able to do even more in His name: sponsoring 30 children in Compassion International’s Child Survivor Program; ensuring that mothers will be able to provide for the physical, social, and emotional needs of their babies and toddlers. Most importantly, they will learn about Jesus' love and grace through their contact with our sister church. Next year, we will revisit the vocational center Vicki talked about in worship a few weeks ago, which we have since learned is not as critical a need as these child sponsorships.

Scripture- Judges 3:7a, 9- The Israelites did evil in the Lord’s sight. They forgot about the Lord their God… But when the people of Israel cried out to the Lord for help, the Lord raised up a rescuer to save them. His name was Othniel, the son of Caleb’s younger brother, Kenaz.

Observations- This is the common theme and pattern we find resurfacing in many generations of Israelites: they stopped paying careful attention to the commandments of God, slackened up in their commitment to worship the one true God, and drifted toward worshiping the gods of other nations with pagan practices. They allowed too many obstacles and temptations to remain in the Promised Land, and many succeeding generations didn’t continue to be faithful to their God.

Application- To be a disciple of Jesus means that we have chosen to sit at His feet to learn how to live. Will there be obstacles and temptations to go off in other directions that aren’t compatible with how Jesus encourages us to live? Absolutely! That’s why God gives us some spiritual “disciplines” that are designed to help keep us close to our stated desire of following Jesus. The Israelites didn’t lose their good habits overnight, but it didn’t take long in any generation to drift away from God’s best and toward pagan rituals and practices. We have a joyful responsibility to honor the practices that are designed to help us in our faith journey: passionate worship, radical hospitality, intentional discipleship, salty service, and extravagant generosity. When we drift, we need to change course quickly. Is the course you’re on going to take you where you really want to go?

Prayer- (by John Wesley) Let the inspiration of the Holy Spirit prepare and assist me in all the duties of this, Your sacred day. That my wandering thoughts may all be fixed on You, my devotion centered upon You, and my apathy quickened into longing for and thirsting after You. Let me join in the prayers and praises of Your Church with committed and holy passion. Let me hear Your Word with listening ears and a determination to obey it. And when I approach Your altar, the tree upon which Jesus died, pour into my heart humility, faith, hope, love and a holy character which reflects the crucified Saviour. Let me make use of this entire day to the ends for which it was intended, doing what must be done but also living out mercy, in prayer, praise and meditation; and let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart be always pleasing in Your sight. Amen.

Scripture- Judges 2:10, 17b- After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge the Lord or remember the mighty things He had done for Israel. How quickly they turned away from the path of their ancestors, who had walked in obedience to the Lord’s commands.

Observations- How quickly the Israelites turned away from following the commands of their God! The temptations to follow other gods and religious practices with far less demanding expectations on attitudes and behaviors drew them away from the truth within one generation. They failed to remember all of the ways God had been with them and sustained them through so many trials.

Application- It is so important that we take every opportunity possible to remember the faithfulness of God and make sure we teach such truth to the next generation. The Book of Judges serves as a cautionary tale about how quickly things can move in the wrong direction and how unwilling people can become to turn around and move back toward God. God remains faithful, even when we choose to drift away. That doesn’t, however, mean there are no consequences for our disobedience. God reluctantly allows us to freely choose not to be in relationship with Him as well. How are you helping the next generation know the truth and live into the truth?

Prayer- Dear Lord, I pray not only for the next generation to survive in this world, but I want to ask that You’d help them thrive and experience the abundant life of Christ. Guide us to honor You by honoring them with the stories and truths from Your Word. We want to remember all that You’ve done and not let Your love and grace skip a generation and certainly not generations. How tragic that would be, O God! Help us remember that the next generation is not the church of tomorrow; rather they are the church today, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Scripture- Judges 1:33- Likewise, the tribe of Naphtali failed to drive out the residents of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath. Instead, they moved in among the Canaanites, who controlled the land. Nevertheless, the people of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath were forced to work as slaves for the people of Naphtali.

Observations- The Book of Judges begins in chapter one by outlining a series of failures by numerous tribes of Israel to follow through on the call from God to drive out other idolatrous nations from among them; instead they tolerated them either because they liked the potential for slave labor, they were tired of going into battle, or they were fearful of the outcome of confronting them in battle. This foreshadowed the temptation to worship other gods and the moral decay that would soon be on the way. The Israelites wrongly assumed they could not only handle the situation, but they believed they could thrive, even without fulfilling the command from God.

Application- If we settle for doing 90% of the right thing in our lives, how far off is settling for 80% of the right thing? Once we accept the invitation to be lifelong learners on the way with Jesus and become His apprentices we are committed to a process of learning more and more about how He wants us to do life. As Jesus’ students, some of time we settle for average or failing grades, because we decide to get along in this life without the guidance and fellowship of our Teacher. Jesus said, “Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father.” (John 15:4, 8)

Prayer- (by St. Francis of Assisi) Almighty, eternal, just and merciful God, give us miserable ones the grace to do for You alone what we know you want us to do and always to desire what pleases You. Inwardly cleansed, interiorly enlightened and inflamed by the fire of the Holy Spirit,
may we be able to follow in the footprints of Your beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and, by Your grace alone, may we make our way to You,
Most High, Who live and rule in perfect Trinity and simple Unity, and are glorified God almighty, forever and ever. Amen.

Jesus also said, “You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me.” (John 15:14-15),

Read Joshua 24

Scripture- Joshua 24:14-15- “So fear the LORD and serve Him wholeheartedly. Put away forever the idols your ancestors worshiped when they lived beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt. Serve the LORD alone. But if you refuse to serve the LORD, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the LORD.”

Observations- That Joshua needed to make such a speech as this foreshadowed some problems on the road ahead for the Israelites. While they agreed to serve Joshua and his family in only serving the Lord, the temptation to worship and serve other gods would plague the chosen people of the Promised Land as we shall soon see in the Book of Judges. As the leader of the nation, Joshua set the example of making a commitment to journey through life with God to experiences and destinations that would honor Him.

Application- If it doesn’t matter where we’re going, then what direction we take makes little difference. If, however, we want to worship and serve God alone, then our freely chosen options are more limited as we operate within the graceful limits provided and guided by God. Our choices matter everyday, because we are either intending to walk more closely with God than ever before or we are moving in another direction. If asked when I decided to serve God, I like to say, “Most recently this morning!” Would you prefer to worship other gods- money, power, stuff, addictions, past hurts, etc. or will it be the God revealed in Scripture?

Prayer- Dear God, thank You for the times when I’ve made choices that have honored You and blessed others. Please help me stay in the process to fully receive Your forgiveness for the many times my choices have veered off course and missed the mark of Your full intention for my life. Put lots of Joshua’s in my life to help me make the next right decision and to encourage, challenge, and strengthen me for the journey with You, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

“God decided in advance to adopt us into His own family by bringing us to Himself through Jesus Christ. This is what He wanted to do, and it gave Him great pleasure.” (Ephesians 1:5) What will we decide today?

Read Joshua 23

Scripture- Joshua 23:6-8- So be very careful to follow everything Moses wrote in the Book of Instruction. Do not deviate from it, turning either to the right or to the left. Make sure you do not associate with the other people still remaining in the land. Do not even mention the names of their gods, much less swear by them or serve them or worship them. Rather, cling tightly to the LORD your God as you have done until now.

Observations- This chapter begins with Joshua acknowledging his advanced years and how much god had accomplished in and through the Israelites during his lifetime. There was a deep sense of gratitude in the midst of how well things were going for God’s people, but with such blessing came great responsibility indicated by one small word…”so.” The nation would always be just one generation away from losing their bearings and drifting far from God, so…Joshua urged them to cling tightly to the Lord, which meant staying humble and deeply aware of their great need for God.

Application- I have a pet peeve. It sends me places to hear someone described as “a self-made man or woman.” Why? Because if that individual made themselves on their own they didn’t have a very wise maker or teacher! Each one of us stands on the shoulders of some other people who have wanted us to succeed. God also says, for instance, it’s important for us to stay closely connected to our deep need for Him- anything else is hubris and will eventually lead us into deep weeds as we do life believing we are “self-made.” It is good to both take responsibility (“so”) for our next moves in life and to “cling tightly to the Lord” as we do that.

Prayer- Dear God, help me remember that without You and the help and guidance from many other Christ followers who have wanted the best for me that “making myself” wouldn’t turn out so well. I get to be a responsible moral agent willing to be self-sufficient and I get to declare my great need to be in a relationship with You and others- it’s like a two sided coin and it takes both sides to make the whole. Discipleship is about being made more in Your image to better reflect Christ, so I desperately need Your help! Keep me close to my need for You. I pray for Your church to lean into and rely upon Your Holy Spirit for power and guidance, rather than settling for being a “self-made,” all too human organization, in Jesus’ name and for His sake. Amen.

“Each time He (Jesus) said, ‘My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness. So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.” (2 Corinthians 12:9),

Scripture- Joshua 22:32-34- Then Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, and the other leaders left the tribes of Reuben and Gad in Gilead and returned to the land of Canaan to tell the Israelites what had happened. And all the Israelites were satisfied and praised God and spoke no more of war against Reuben and Gad. The people of Reuben and Gad named the altar “Witness,” for they said, “It is a witness between us and them that the LORD is our God, too.”

Observations- In the first part of this chapter Joshua gave thanks for the faithfulness, follow through, and effectiveness of Reuben, Gad, and the ½ tribe of Manasseh on their promise to fight with the other Israelites until they had fully inhabited the Promised Land and were at peace. When the tribes to the west of the Jordan heard they built their own altar, they became enraged and were ready to go to war for this affront to properly worshiping God at the Tabernacle, which was then in Shiloh. However, before immediately going into battle, a delegation from the west went to meet face to face with the tribes to the east, and the misunderstanding was resolved without violence. The tribes to the east were merely concerned that in future generations they wouldn’t be welcome across the Jordan River.

Application- It’s easy to throw metaphorical stones at the western tribes for assuming the worst possible motives from the tribes to the east, especially after the tribes from the east lived out such a high level of faithfulness to the cause of helping the other tribes inhabit and secure the Promised Land. The fact is, however, that it’s a common practice for us, too; that is, we (even as Christ followers in God’s church who know better!) can presuppose negative motives when we don’t understand another person or group. That is why face to face conversations with the right people (as the western tribes talked only to one another, their anger and fears were stoked, not relieved!) are so important in resolving misunderstandings. Are you assuming negative motives for actions you don’t understand? Jesus challenged His followers to avoid gossip and work toward resolution: “If a fellow believer hurts you, go and tell him- work it out between the two of you. If he listens, you've made a friend. If he won't listen, take one or two others along so that the presence of witnesses will keep things honest, and try again. If he still won't listen, tell the church. If he won't listen to the church, you'll have to start over from scratch, confront him with the need for repentance, and offer again God's forgiving love.” (Matthew 18:15-17- The Message)

Prayer- Dear God, You sent Your Son to redeem us and be the full expression of Your love among us. When Jesus died on the cross and You raised Him from the dead, one goal was to break down walls of hostility and to move us to greater levels of understanding. Lord, You know the conflict each one of us is engaged in right now, and we pray for the best possible resolution of these misunderstandings. The worst motives may in fact be at work, but help us not so quickly presuppose such motives, especially without a face to face conversation. Help me learn how to be as gracious with others as You have been toward me! Amen.

Scripture- Joshua 21:43-45- So the LORD gave to Israel all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors, and they took possession of it and settled there. And the LORD gave them rest on every side, just as he had solemnly promised their ancestors. None of their enemies could stand against them, for the LORD helped them conquer all their enemies. Not a single one of all the good promises the LORD had given to the family of Israel was left unfulfilled; everything he had spoken came true.

Observations- This chapter lists the final land grants to the Levites, who weren’t given a specific territory because they had the responsibility of ministering to the entire nation. Through many stops and starts, trials and tribulations, leadership blunders, and outright disobedience over many years, the Israelites finally gained possession of the Promised Land in God’s perfect timing. It had been about 700 years previous when God first spoke a word of hope and promise to Abraham and Sarah in Genesis 12:1-3- “God told Abram: "Leave your country, your family, and your father's home for a land that I will show you. I'll make you a great nation and bless you. I'll make you famous; you'll be a blessing. I'll bless those who bless you; those who curse you I'll curse. All the families of the Earth will be blessed through you.” (The Message)

Application- In Romans 5:3-5 Paul reminds us: “We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because He has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with His love.” Our waiting for God’s promises is always purposeful as we grow in the knowledge and assurance of His love for us.

Prayer- Dear Lord, teach me to be more patient– with life as it comes, with people as they are, and with myself as learn on the way with Jesus. I like to move fast, so I push for things to happen in my timing, which is often not Your best timing. Guide me to freely surrender my will to Your far better will. I pray for Your Church to seek the slow moving Big Picture of what You have in store for us next. Let me wait with patience and grace for Your best to unfold in Your timing. Don’t let me miss out on You, because I’m in too big of hurry to get somewhere else. Amen.

“We also pray that you will be strengthened with all His glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need.” (Colossians 1:11a),

Scripture- Joshua 20:9- These cities were set apart for all the Israelites as well as the foreigners living among them. Anyone who accidentally killed another person could take refuge in one of these cities. In this way, they could escape being killed in revenge prior to standing trial before the local assembly.

Observations- Years before the “cities of refuge” became a reality Moses had dreamed of and spoken about setting them up. When the Israelites finally lived in the Promised Land, he wanted places that would ensure justice and fairness for citizens and foreigners, especially in light of accidental deaths. The law of “an eye for an eye” was designed to limit the amount of revenge someone could inflict on someone else, but motivation also needed to be considered. As Israel became a nation in its own right, they needed to consider how they would order their life together.

Application- There is a strong biblical tradition of pursuing justice, being honest, and lifting up the value and necessity of integrity. When the Israelites ignored God’s call for justice, the prophets rose up under God’s direction to condemn practices that missed the mark of God’s full intention for His people. Paul said in Galatians 6:7: “Don’t be misled- you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant.” How do we make justice central to the way we do life? How can Jesus’ church in 2012 function like a “city of refuge” from 3400 years ago- as a place dedicated to justice, fairness, and radical hospitality?

Prayer- (by Martin Luther King, Jr.) We thank Thee for thy Church founded upon thy Word, that challenges us to do more than sing and pray, but go out and work as though the very answer to our prayers depended on us and not upon Thee. Keep us, we pray, in perfect peace, help us to walk together, pray together, sing together and live together until that day when all God’s children: Black, White, Red and Yellow will rejoice in one common band of humanity in the kingdom of our Lord and of our God, we pray. Amen.

Scripture- Joshua 19:51- These are the territories that Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the tribal leaders allocated as grants of land to the tribes of Israel by casting sacred lots in the presence of the LORD at the entrance of the Tabernacle at Shiloh. So the division of the land was completed.

Observations- The fair and equitable allocation of the land between the various tribes was now complete. This served to help every tribe, clan, and family know what its own responsibilities were and helped to reduce conflict among the Israelites. It didn’t work perfectly, but it was a far better way to be organized than haphazardly moving into the Promised Land. This level of organization served them well.

Application- I’m looking at the little calendar on my computer we received as a gift at Christmas that asks the question: “How can I be a better disciple of Jesus Christ today?” I’m responsible before God and the community of faith to ask myself this question and seek to live out a story of my own that reflects God’s story in His Word. If I’m going to grow in my faith, I must pay attention to and honor certain boundary markers (10 Commandments, values of honesty and integrity, and most importantly the command from Jesus about loving God and loving others) designed to help me draw closer to God. Such boundary markers are intended by God to serve as graceful limits to guide us in our journey of discipleship.

Prayer- (by Martin Luther King, Jr.) “If I can help somebody as I pass along; If I can cheer somebody with a word or song; If I can show somebody he’s traveling wrong; then my living will not be in vain. If I can do my duty as a Christian ought; If I can bring salvation to a world once wrought; If I can spread the message as the Master taught; then my living will not be in vain. Yes, Jesus, I want to be on your right or your left side, not for any selfish reason. I want to be on your right or your left side, not in terms of some political kingdom or ambition. Scripture- Joshua 18: 1-4a- Now that the land was under Israelite control, the entire community of Israel gathered at Shiloh and set up the Tabernacle. But there remained seven tribes who had not yet been allotted their grants of land. Then Joshua asked them, “How long are you going to wait before taking possession of the remaining land the LORD, the God of your ancestors, has given to you? Select three men from each tribe, and I will send them out to explore the land and map it out..."

Observations- Even though they were well aware of the task assigned to them by God, there may have been many excuses that kept the remaining tribes of Israel from following through with God's command to possess the Promised Land. Joshua, however, was tired of their delays, and so, as the leader of the nation, he pushed them to get moving. Yes, he asked them what was keeping them from moving forward, but he also knew none of their responses would be sufficient for avoiding God's clear call; therefore, he was very directive about the actions to be taken next to get the remaining 7 tribes moving to possess the land God had for them, too.

Application- Have you ever been clear about what God had in store for you next, but were reluctant to move forward with the next right action you needed to make? Perhaps you were comfortable with the way things were, you were concerned about the risk or the cost (emotional, spiritual, status, or financial) involved, the new direction seemed like so much work, or you worried you wouldn't be up to the task. That's when we need a Joshua in our lives who is willing and able to deliver the kick in the pants we most need from someone who won't let us settle for average or OK in our lives. What's just over the horizon for you to move toward next with trust and faith?

Prayer- Dear God, thank You for the people in my life who have served me by gently and firmly challenging me to pursue Your plans for my life. Help me be open and available to receiving more of Your promises as I step out in trust that You are already where You are inviting me to move toward next. I pray for the people of Your church to stay open and available to the ministry and mission You have in store for us as You guide and direct us. We love You, Lord! Send us the Joshua’s we need as we need them, in Jesus' name. Amen.

Scripture- Joshua 17:3-4- However, Zelophehad, a descendant of Hepher son of Gilead, son of Makir, son of Manasseh, had no sons. He had only daughters, whose names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. These women came to Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the Israelite leaders and said, “The LORD commanded Moses to give us a grant of land along with the men of our tribe.”

Observations- Traditionally, land was inherited only by sons, but these sisters had pointed out this injustice (their father died without a son) to Moses a number of years previously (Numbers 27:1-11) and Moses, who consulted with God about what to do, agreed with their position. These sisters were bold and courageous enough to ask for what they thought was right, and it led to a change in the way things were done for all the families of Israel. It wasn’t hard for Joshua to honor their request, for a new guideline and tradition was already in place.

Application- These sisters lived out the principle of asking for what they most wanted in the face of an injustice. There are times when we don’t realize a policy or tradition is unfair to a particular person or group, and the first step toward change has to be people boldly declaring why something is not right. Is this risky? Of course, it is, but the alternative is settling for injustice. In this case, simply pointing out the injustice and asking for the tradition to be changed was enough, but that’s rarely the case. We get to ask and ask largely of our God in the face of injustice! What do you see- after extensively consulting with God and His Word- that needs to be changed? How will you cooperate with God to bring that change into reality?

Prayer- Dear Lord, thank You for Your Word and the power it has through You to speak into our lives. Help us hear more loudly and clearly than ever before what You want to do for us, in us, and through us! Help me to fix my thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable, so my actions will better reflect Jesus Christ to all I meet. When I see injustice, give me Your holy boldness to ask largely for Your help and courage to act in ways that will honor You and bless people, in Jesus’ name and for His sake. Amen.

“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You, all whose thoughts are fixed on You!” (Isaiah 26:3),

Scripture- Joshua 16:9-10- In addition, some towns with their surrounding villages in the territory allocated to the half-tribe of Manasseh were set aside for the tribe of Ephraim. They did not drive the Canaanites out of Gezer, however, so the people of Gezer live as slaves among the people of Ephraim to this day.

Observations- It didn’t seem like such a big deal at the time, but the half-tribe of Manasseh and the tribe of Ephraim didn’t choose to follow the Lord’s previous command to remove the Canaanites from this territory; instead they settled for having them serve them as slave laborers. While they may have thought this was a valid compromise in their generation, it cost future generations a great deal of time, effort, and battles as both King David and King Solomon struggled in this region.

Application- Compromise in general is often an important tool in getting along well with others in the midst of many different and competing ideas. However, compromising with what God has already commanded is never a good idea. When we choose to do the right thing, but are then confronted with obstacles, conflicts, and people wanting to do the wrong thing, it’s not a victory when we change our mind and decide to do 90% of the right thing. Once we start down such a slippery slope we are in danger of even further compromising our integrity. Have you made compromises with the truth that have led you down the wrong path? What needs to change?

Prayer- Dear Lord, I am grateful for Your Word to strengthen and guide me through my daily life. Help me be open and available to appropriate and life-giving compromise that builds community and points to Jesus Christ as our Leader and Forgiver, but give me courage to stand firm and never compromise with Your commands and values in a way that leads me to lose my integrity. Help us be a church that is always seeking and listening for Your voice to compromise when it’s the right thing to do and never compromise when it would lead us away from Your best for our lives.

“Joyful are people of integrity, who follow the instructions of the LORD. Joyful are those who obey His laws and search for Him with all their hearts. They do not compromise with evil, and they walk only in his paths.” (Psalm 119:1-3),

Read Joshua 15

Scripture- Joshua 15:12- The western boundary was the shoreline of the Mediterranean Sea. These are the boundaries for the clans of the tribe of Judah.

Observations- It may seem rather mundane and unimportant to talk about the establishment of boundaries for the tribes and clans of Israel, but well understood boundaries would help them avoid painful conflict and misunderstandings in the future. God’s Word often times directs our attention to the proper boundaries for right attitudes and behaviors in this life. In this case we have literal boundaries helping to establish who is responsible for living in and developing a particular area with God’s blessing and help. They were called to be effective and faithful managers (stewards who worked for the Ultimate Owner) of the Promised Land assigned to them.

Application- We are also called to be honorable stewards of all God has given to us. We are more likely to manage our “territory” well when we are clearly aware of God’s best practices and boundaries. Boundaries remind us what I am uniquely responsible to accomplish and also help us release what we aren’t responsible for doing. Cain asked God the question, “Am I my brothers keeper?” (Genesis 4:9) Well, yes, in fact we are, but in what ways? We open ourselves to God’s guidance to properly discern the difference between doing too much and doing too little so we can get it just right. We are responsible to God and there are things we can let go. Are you more in need of taking your responsibilities more seriously or hearing God invite you to lighten up?

Prayer- (It’s always a good time to remember the full version of the Serenity Prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr) God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His will; That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him forever in the next. Amen.

Scripture: Joshua 14:1-2- Now these are the areas the Israelites received as an inheritance in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the tribal clans of Israel allotted to them. Their inheritances were assigned by lot to the nine and a half tribes, as the Lord had commanded through Moses.

Observation: For the past seven years, with God's help and in His power, the Israelites had conquered one enemy after another. God gave them victory in battle so that they could take the cities and kings. But, the Israelites had not taken possession of the land itself, even though it'd been promised to them long ago. This was an important principle being instituted: God retains ownership of the land. The people merely receive it in trust as their inheritance.

Application: I have to admit, I didn't expect to find a stewardship lesson in this chapter but there it is. Since God is the One who owns the land (and our talents, our minds, our wealth, our health and everything else) and we are merely given the use of them while on this earth, we have a responsibility to be good stewards of them. What God has shared with us, we have a responsibility to use for His glory. In Joshua's day, the land was parceled out to tribes and families – the idea being that the land was to be used by all the people for the benefit of all the people. Extended family was encouraged and the sharing of physical resources was institutionalized; there was a principle of mutual assistance... in God's family, everyone was to be cared for, especially the poor and marginalized. In our own day, God still expects His blessings will be freely-shared for the protection, health and well-being of all those in our community... especially those in need.

Prayer: Dear Christ Jesus, thank You for Your example. One of the messages I get from your time here on earth is that we, too, are called to be incarnational in our communities – just as You were. Our presence ought to make a difference – just as You did. Our words and actions should challenge the status quo – just as You are today. Help me to face each new day and see each new blessing as a new way to honor and glorify You.

Read Joshua 13

Scripture: Joshua 13:1- When Joshua was an old man, the Lord said to him, "You are growing old, and much land remains to be conquered." The Message

Observation: After spending his early years toiling as an Egyptian slave, Joshua helped Moses lead the Israelites on their 40-year trek through their desert and, for the last seven years, had been serving as their military leader during the fight to conquer the Promised Land. Joshua may have started to feel like he was owed a break. After all, he was approaching100-years-old by this time; but, God says very clearly in this passage that age is no barrier – He still has work for Joshua to do.

Application: Fred Wallace's dad, Royce, is 96 and still drives for Meals on Wheels several days a week at his home church. Fred tells me his dad says that as long as he keeps waking up in the morning, he figures God still has something for him to do. What a great example for us all! Changes in our circumstances may require adjustments in how we serve our church and our community through the years; but, as Pastor Jamie related in his message yesterday, some of those changes in our circumstances may be God's way of getting our attention, encouraging us to draw closer to Him. Let's always remain open to new ways to serve. How can I be a better disciple of Jesus Christ today?

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for the opportunity to partner with You throughout our lives here on earth; and to "retire" with you in Heaven. Whenever I feel tired or put upon, help me to find new strength and renewed commitment in You. Remember me when You come into Your Kingdom, Lord. And may I never forget whose child I am and for whom I toil – to Your glory and honor. Amen.

Scripture- Joshua 12:1- These are the kings east of the Jordan River who had been killed by the Israelites and whose land was taken. Their territory extended from the Arnon Gorge to Mount Hermon and included all the land east of the Jordan Valley.

Observations- This chapter chronicles the 31 kings and nations the Israelites defeated with God's help. This is written so the people will not forget how remarkable this accomplishment was and that it couldn't have been achieved alone or in their own power. Yes, they did it together, but even more importantly they did it under the direction and strength provided by God, the One who supplied all of their needs and journeyed with them in spite of their extensive disobedience. This was worthy to be honored and celebrated.

Application- How often do we need to be reminded that we didn't accomplish anything of enduring value in our own power? On the other hand, it's important for us to give thanks and celebrate what God has done through us to accomplish His will. It's important for us not to be so full of ourselves, especially as disciples of Jesus, who we think we can function effectively without the presence and power of the Holy Spirit empowering us, but it's also vital for us to know we can do great things with God's help as we open ourselves up to His ongoing influence. Are you aware of the ways God is giving you victory? Are you finding ways to celebrate the victory you are experiencing with God's blessing and help?

Prayer- Thank You, God, for all of the ways You are at work in my life. Help me have eyes to see the victory You are winning whenever I cooperate fully with You. I am grateful to be a part of something so much bigger than myself in Jesus' church. Guide us to discover more ways to honor and glorify You as we do life together open to the next victory You have in store for us. Amen.

Read Joshua 11

Scripture- Joshua 11:21-23- During this period Joshua destroyed all the descendants of Anak, who lived in the hill country of Hebron, Debir, Anab, and the entire hill country of Judah and Israel. He killed them all and completely destroyed their towns. None of the descendants of Anak were left in all the land of Israel, though some still remained in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod. So Joshua took control of the entire land, just as the Lord had instructed Moses. He gave it to the people of Israel as their special possession, dividing the land among the tribes. So the land finally had rest from war.

Observations- While this period of conquest seems to have raced along, it took around 7 years for the Israelites to accomplish all of these victories. It is significant that the last victory mentioned is over the descendants of Anak, who were the giants we read about in Numbers 13-14 that the Israelites refused to face a number of years earlier. Only Caleb and Joshua brought back reports of what they saw, not how difficult it would be to defeat their opponents. Now they met the challenge, with God’s help and Joshua’s leadership, head on and were given the victory God had promised years earlier.

Application- We live in a microwave world and want instant success and gratification of all our needs. Waiting isn’t in our vocabulary. The Israelites wandered in the desert for 40 years, and then struggled for 7 more years to receive the Promised Land. We are likely to cry out, “God, I want patience, and I demand that You give it to me right now!” Just as the Israelites needed to be able to patiently and courageously face the giants in front of them, so we need to have perseverance in the midst of all of our trials and struggles. Can we trust that God is bigger and more powerful than any of our problems?

Prayer- Dear God, I am so grateful for Your promise to be with me and to guide me through all of the difficulties I have faced, am facing right now, and will face in the future. Even when I wasn’t able to specifically see how You were with me, I could trust the fact of Your presence as proclaimed through Your Word. This is true for Your people, the Body of Christ, too. You are in charge, and we get to be blessed and led by Jesus! There will always be new giants for us to face, so I pray for Your Church to be open and available to the guidance of Your Holy Spirit, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

“Pursue righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.” (1 Timothy 6:11b),

Read Joshua 10

Scripture- Joshua 10:7-8- So Joshua and his entire army, including his best warriors, left Gilgal and set out for Gibeon. “Do not be afraid of them,” the Lord said to Joshua, “for I have given you victory over them. Not a single one of them will be able to stand up to you.”

Observations- In chapter 10 we find the Israelites winning significant victories against their enemies as they followed God’s commands. They didn’t do it alone by any stretch of the imagination, but to receive the victories God had in store for them, the people needed to cooperate with God. The Bible tells us God helped them by producing a storm of hail and by having the “sun stand still” (in other words, it was a very long day!), but the leaders and the people had to join God in what He was up to among them to bring the victory.

Application- If we want to experience God’s victory in our lives, we also get to cooperate with His best will for our lives. All of us encounter spiritual enemies, problems, or character flaws that need to be eradicated from our lives in order to move forward in faith. We don’t need to be afraid, for God is with us to strengthen us and give us His courage for the journey we are on with Him. How can we better cooperate with God to receive the victory He already wants to give to us?

Prayer- (by Richard Foster) By the authority of Jesus Christ I resist all evil powers seeking sway within me. I stand against the fear that makes me want to manage and control others. Grant me the gift of faith, O Lord, to overcome my fear. I stand against the greed that makes me use others for my own selfish purposes. Grant a spirit of generosity, O Lord, to temper my greed. I stand against the pride that drives me to seek inordinate attention. Grant me the grace of service, O Lord, to conquer my pride. May faith, hope and love have increasing sway over every thought and action. Amen.

Read Joshua 9

Scripture- Joshua 9:14-15- So the Israelites examined their food, but they did not consult the Lord. Then Joshua made a peace treaty with them and guaranteed their safety, and the leaders of the community ratified their agreement with a binding oath.

Observations- In this chapter the Israelites are manipulatively and shrewdly tricked into a treaty by people who believed they were in deep trouble as they believed in the power of the God they had heard saved the people of Israel from slavery in Egypt. Because they saw the hand of God’s blessing upon them, they hatched a plan that would allow them to live as servants, which seemed better than being wiped out. We don’t know how the Lord would have directed them (in general God had told them not to make binding treaties as they entered into the Promised Land) in this specific instance, because the leaders of Israel didn’t bother to consult God about what to do in this new situation.

Application- How often do we go our own way (that may even seem quite reasonable!) without having a conversation with God about what to do next? It’s not only negative things that could be obstacles to God’s best plan for us. There may, for instance, even be many good things we choose to do that hinder us from doing God’s best for our lives simply because we didn’t bother to seek God’s direction and guidance. The point here is about the importance of simply seeking His will and having the conversation with God, so that we’re open and available to what He most wants us to do next.

Prayer- (by Lady Julian of Norwich- 1342 – 1416) Lord, You know what I desire, but I desire it only if it is Your will that I should have it. If it is not Your will, good Lord, do not be displeased, for my will is to do Your will. Amen.

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” (Romans 12:2),

Read Joshua 8

Scripture- Joshua 8:34-35- Joshua then read to them all the blessings and curses Moses had written in the Book of Instruction. Every word of every command that Moses had ever given was read to the entire assembly of Israel, including the women and children and the foreigners who lived among them.

Observations- Once the sin of Achan had been found out and attended to by the community of faith the Israelites were ready, under the direction of God, to do battle with the people of Ai. God gave them victory and they celebrated by gathering together to renew their understanding of God’s will and covenant for them. They accomplished this by opening up God’s Word and reading it. They did this as an expression of God’s goodness and in gratitude for His help and ongoing blessing.

Application- What battles are you facing today? What battles are looming on the horizon for you? What are the battles that we must fight together, with God’s help, as the Body of Christ in this place in 2012, so that God receives glory and victory? We get to do battle with the forces of apathy that encourage us not to care about what others are up against, to think that our participation in the Body of Christ isn’t very important, or to believe our contribution is irrelevant. We are the Body of Christ, His hands and feet for a hurting and broken world, and we are strengthened by spending time in His Word being renewed and revitalized for what God has in store for us today.

Prayer- Dear Lord, give us the wisdom to wait on direction and guidance from You, which requires us to spend time in Your Word and invite the Holy Spirit to come speak through it and a still, small voice. Give us the strength and the courage to step out in faith trusting that You will be with us on the journey of discovering Your best will for out life together as we do battle with the forces of apathy and the lure of sin in our own lives and in our culture all around us. We need You, O God! We need each other, too! Amen.

“Your body has many parts—limbs, organs, cells—but no matter how many parts you can name, you're still one body. It's exactly the same with Christ. By means of his one Spirit, we all said good-bye to our partial and piecemeal lives. We each used to independently call our own shots, but then we entered into a large and integrated life in which He has the final say in everything.” (Romans 12:12-13- The Message),

Scripture- Joshua 7:20-21- Achan replied, “It is true! I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel. Among the plunder I saw a beautiful robe from Babylon, 200 silver coins, and a bar of gold weighing more than a pound. I wanted them so much that I took them. They are hidden in the ground beneath my tent, with the silver buried deeper than the rest.”

Observations- Achan deviated from the Lord’s instructions by stealing some things for himself, even though this was strictly prohibited in advance. The problem for Israel was that many others in the nation and his own family also had to suffer the consequences of his disobedience. While it may seem unfair to us for other people to have to experience the results of Achan’s sin, God wanted the Israelites to be clear that sin had implications and consequences that went far beyond the boundaries of one’s “personal life.”

Application- My sin- the ways I personally miss the mark of God’s full intention for my life- always affects other people besides just me. The old saying that “Sin always takes us further than we want to go, it keeps us longer than we want to stay, and it always costs much more than we want to pay” is true. The Good News is we can be forgiven for the ways we mess up: “If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.” (1 John 1:8-9) Forgiveness by God, however, doesn’t mean we are free from the natural consequences of our actions.

Prayer- (a prayer by Richard Foster) “Clean out, O God, the inner stream of my life: All the duplicity, All the avarice, All the falsity. Search out, O Lord, the hidden motives of my life: All the conceit, All the anger, All the fear. Root out, divine Master, the destructive actions of my life: All the manipulation, All the scheming, All the guile. May the operations of faith, hope, and love increase in everything I am and in everything I do. Amen.”

Hebrews 12:1b reminds us to “strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us,”

Read Joshua 6

Scripture- Joshua 6:1-2- Now the gates of Jericho were tightly shut because the people were afraid of the Israelites. No one was allowed to go out or in. But the Lord said to Joshua, “I have given you Jericho, its king, and all its strong warriors.”

Observations- Jericho, a symbol of great power for the Canaanites, was an incredibly well fortified and long established city that was well known throughout the region, so it was a strategic city to strike first to let others know what they would be up against if they chose to do battle with the Israelites. It’s hard for us to read how God wanted no one to be left alive (except for Rahab and her family) and no objects left undestroyed. The Canaanites, however, had many chances to turn from their evil practices and idolatry. God promised victory in this case, but He didn’t say it would be easy.

Application- Would God tell us in 2012 to wipe out an entire population of people? That’s highly unlikely and would be counter to the message and life of Jesus, God’s Word made flesh, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have much to learn from Joshua. God declared victory was already theirs, but they had a huge battle yet to fight and specific instructions to carry out as an expression of obedience. That God is with us and promises us victories doesn’t mean we’ll be free from struggle or difficulty. Neither does it mean we won’t have to do our part to ensure the victory that God has already said is on the way for us.

Prayer- God, thank You for Your presence in our lives. We are grateful for the promise of victorious living as we seek to do life listening carefully to You and responding faithfully to Your voice. Let Your Word speak loudly and clearly to us in this New Year. In the midst of all our struggling and straining to live into the victory You have in store for us, help us to discern the next right course of action on our journey with You. Expand our understanding of who we get to come alongside to love and serve in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Read 2 Corinthians 5

Scripture- 2 Corinthians 5:16-17- So we have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view. At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view. How differently we know Him now! This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

Observations- Paul wanted the members of the church in Corinth to grow into a deep understanding of what it meant to be a new creation in Christ. Jesus didn’t come to earth as a human being, teach truth, die on a cross, and experience resurrection so we’d be a little bit nicer to one another; rather he wanted them to know the power of the new life that came to them as a gift through Jesus Christ. It’s not about resolving to do better; instead it’s about truly being grasped by the reality that God has declared us to be brand new with a fresh start. God’s mercies are new every morning!

Application- Happy New Life! Are you aware of who and whose you are in Christ? Are you aware of the depth, breadth, and height of God’s amazing love for you and desire for you to freshly experience His new life? When we get started on the journey of following Jesus Christ, we are new creations, and then we get to enter into a process to become who we already are in God’s eyes. I get to ask myself questions like: “Am I acting in a way that is in line with who I am now.” Because of the new life God has freely given me in Christ, I have a greater level of responsibility and accountability.

Prayer- (John Wesley’s Covenant Prayer from 1780- commonly used on New Year’s Eve or Day) I am no longer my own, but thine. Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employed by thee or laid aside for thee,

exalted for thee or brought low for thee. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal. And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it. And the covenant which I have made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.

Read Philippians 3

Scripture: Philippians 3:13-14- No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.

Observation: In this chapter, we find the Apostle Paul taking a spiritual inventory of his life. He describes himself as someone pursuing Christ who has not yet arrived at his goal and who stands in need of improvement. He's describing every one of us, don't you think?

Application: As we look forward with eager anticipation to the start of another year, we may also be tempted to look back in regret or remorse at the things we did not get accomplished for Christ this past year – or even worse, let past wrong-doings continue eroding our confidence. As Christ-followers, we must not allow our failures of the past cloud our vision of the future.

The Greek word Paul used for "forgetting" in today's passage means "to cease to be affected by." This ability to forget flows from the forgiveness Christ offers. It's His gift of forgiveness and forgetting that makes possible the second direction of Paul's words, allowing us to "press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize…"

We can never change the past. But, by the grace of God we can make the most of our future.

Prayer: Dear God, we're grateful for all our many blessings and look forward to what You have in store for us in the year ahead. Help us to not become distracted by the events of this life but to keep our eyes on the goal: on You and Your Kingdom. Thank You for Your gift of forgiveness.

Read Joshua 5

Scripture: Joshua 5:10-12- While the Israelites were camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, they celebrated Passover on the evening of the fourteenth day of the first month. The very next day they began to eat unleavened bread and roasted grain harvested from the land. No manna appeared on the day they first ate from the crops of the land, and it was never seen again. So from that time on the Israelites ate from the crops of Canaan.

Observation: As the people of Israel traveled through the wilderness, they were in a place where little food existed; certainly nowhere near enough to feed a crowd that numbered some two or three million people. In response to their need for food, the Lord moved in a supernatural way. He gave them a substance called "manna". The manna provided them hope in the midst of their desperate situation. Throughout their 40-year journey in the desert, each time they ate today's meal, there was the promise that there would be more food tomorrow. They could lie down at night resting in the assurance that God had their needs on His heart.

In this passage we read that as soon as the people were able to provide for themselves from the rich produce of Canaan, God stopped the manna. He didn't give them a chance to get lazy! God always provides; but He is perfectly free to change the way in which we encounter His grace from time to time. We need to trust in Him -- and not in the specific ways He has provided for us in the past -- or we may stumble when our circumstances change.

Application: God can and does provide miraculously for His people as needed, but He also expects us to use our God-given talents and resources to provide for ourselves. I need to remember when my prayers seem to go unanswered that what I need may be already within my reach. I just need to pray for the wisdom to see it, and the energy and motivation to do it. To fully trust that He always has my best interests on His heart.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for all the many ways you shower your grace, love and provision on us. I'm in awe of the efforts You continue to expend to bring the entire world into Your Kingdom. And, that You give us the freedom to choose to partner with You. May we gratefully respond with open hearts, open minds and open eyes to better see where you are at work in the world -- and with open hands to more freely share our many blessings with others.

Read Joshua 4

Scripture: Joshua 4:21-24- Then Joshua said to the Israelites, "In the future your children will ask, 'What do these stones mean?' Then you can tell them, 'This is where the Israelites crossed the Jordan on dry ground.' For the Lord your God dried up the river right before your eyes, and he kept it dry until you were all across, just as he did at the Red Sea when he dried it up until we had all crossed over. He did this so all the nations of the earth might know that the Lord's hand is powerful, and so you might fear the Lord your God forever."

Observation: These stones were to stand as a reminder to future generations that Israel crossed the Jordan not because of its own ability, its own strength, or its own cleverness, but because of God who was with them and guiding them. This memorial would give God's people hope for the future based on their memories of the past.

Application: Some people live for the past; certain it was better then, they yearn to return to "the good old days". Other people live for the future; their efforts fixated on the day that things can be somehow different than they are now. The Bible teaches us that we are privileged to live in the present: full of hope and joy for what is yet to come because we remember what has already been done for us. God has offered us promises for the future which sustain us in the present. And He knows how easy it is for us to get so caught up in the unrelenting demands of the present that He's given us memorials to help bring our focus back to where it belongs, on Him. God gave the Israelites memorials like these twelve stones, the various festivals and ritual offerings, the Ark of the Covenant, and the Temple. And then He gave the entire world Himself in human form as the ultimate memorial to help us keep our focus where it belongs, on Him. And, God's Son gave us memorials like the Last Supper and Baptism, and the Cross and empty tomb. They remind us of who God is and what He has done – so great is His love for us.

Prayer: Father, we don't know what is going to happen today or in the future. But, we know that You know all things and have wonderful plans for our lives. Help us to remember how great is Your love for us. Praise God! Guide us, and may all we do be for Your glory. In Jesus name, Amen.

Scripture: Joshua 3:14-17- So the people left their camp to cross the Jordan, and the priests who were carrying the Ark of the Covenant went ahead of them. It was the harvest season, and the Jordan was overflowing its banks. But as soon as the feet of the priests who were carrying the Ark touched the water at the river's edge, the water above that point began backing up a great distance away at a town called Adam, which is near Zarethan. And the water below that point flowed on to the Dead Sea until the riverbed was dry. Then all the people crossed over near the town of Jericho. Meanwhile, the priests who were carrying the Ark of the Lord's Covenant stood on dry ground in the middle of the riverbed as the people passed by. They waited there until the whole nation of Israel had crossed the Jordan on dry ground.

Observation: Crossing over the Jordan meant entering a new kind of life in the Promised Land for the Israelites. But the land of Canaan they were entering was not an earthly paradise in which there would be no problems. Canaan represented a great improvement over the past 400 years; but it was not utopia. It was a place where the whole nature of what it is to be God's people would have to be worked out. Through all the trials and tribulations to come, God's people had the assurance that God's power & presence (represented in the Ark of the Covenant) "went ahead of them".

Application: As the old year winds down and we start thinking about what the new year ahead holds for us, it seems appropriate to ask, "How can I follow the Lord better?" Following the Lord may not be the easiest thing we ever do, but it will always be the best thing we ever do. If I ever expect to get past my own obstacles and enter my Canaan, I must learn to trust God completely. We worry over tomorrow, yet the Lord has said (Mt 6:25-33; Phil 4:19). We worry over material things, yet the Lord has promised (Heb 13:5). We worry over so many things, yet the Lord tells us that all of our worry is sin and that our duty is to trust Him (Phil 4:6-7). The bottom line is this: Jesus is all-powerful, all-knowing and He is all-present. He is greater than any problem we have ever or will ever face in life. His desire is that we simply take Him at His word and trust Him.

Prayer: Dear Lord, in our troubles and concerns, remind us that You are near. Give us confident strides as we follow Your will and Your path. When obstacles seem too great for us, help us remember they're not too great for You. When I hesitate to embrace change, give me the faith I need to embrace You. Walk with us Lord, walk with us. Amen.

Scripture- Joshua 2:8-9a, 11- Before the spies went to sleep that night, Rahab went up on the roof to talk with them. “I know the Lord has given you this land,” she told them. “No wonder our hearts have melted in fear! No one has the courage to fight after hearing such things. For the Lord your God is the supreme God of the heavens above and the earth below.”

Observations- While Rahab wasn’t busy pursuing a lifestyle in the city of Jericho that honored the Lord of the Israelites, she did express great faith in the God who had been leading them out of the desert and into the Promised Land. Her help so impressed and inspired the spies that they agreed to the protection she wanted for her family. This story serves to remind people in every generation that God can use anyone as a conduit of His blessing, for someone’s past need not define them forever. In fact, Rahab shows up again in God’s Word in the Gospel of Matthew’s (Matthew 1:5) genealogy of Jesus.

Application- Do you ever wonder if someone has done something so awful that it completely disqualifies them from being used by God? Have you ever wondered that about yourself? It seems to me the story of Rahab would help settle such wonderments. No matter how far or for how long we’ve traveled away from God the fact remains that through the grace of Jesus Christ our God still has plenty of room to redeem and save one more person to join in His kingdom adventure- loving and serving Him and others in this life and being with Him forever beyond this life.

Prayer- Dear God, help me to trust that You can work through me, even me, just as You found ways to work in and through someone like Rahab long ago. Her past didn’t keep her from entering into the new future You had in store for her. Please don’t let my past get in the way of what You want to do next in my life, but let me have the kind of faith and willingness to act of your friend and servant, Rahab. She was a difference maker and we can be, with Your help, difference makers, too. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Scripture- Joshua 1:7-9- “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do. Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do. This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Observations- A new chapter began for the Israelites with the death of Moses and the leadership of Joshua, for it meant it was now time to cross over the Jordan River and enter into the Promised Land. God gave all kind of encouragement and instruction to Joshua as he stepped into his new role. He was to remember all that he had already been taught and received as he continued to grow in the way he understood what he read. The ongoing refrain from God was “Be strong and courageous,” which means that was a message Joshua must have needed to hear over and over.

Application- Isn’t that a message we need to continue receiving? Do we ever reach a point where we can say, “I’ve got plenty of strength and courage for all I’m facing, so please don’t give me anymore, Lord?” No, instead we keep coming back to God’s “Book of Instruction” to remember and give thanks for His previous provision, current presence and help, and promise to guide us into the future. As we learn how to obey (listen carefully and respond faithfully) to God’s Word for our lives, we can trust that “the Lord our God is with us wherever we go.”

Prayer- O God, You know exactly how much strength and courage I continue to need because of how much I leak, so keep pouring Yourself into me as I spend time in Your Word and intend to follow Your will. Help me remember that I get to do my part in the Covenant in order to help myself be more available to receive what You want to give me. Thank You for Your promise to be with me wherever I go. Thank You for guiding and leading Your church through every experience that would threaten to sap our strength or leave us feeling discouraged. Amen.

“Open your mouth and taste, open your eyes and see— how good God is. Blessed are you who run to Him.” (Psalm 34:8- The Message),

Scripture- John 1:14- The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood. We saw the glory with our own eyes, the one-of-a-kind glory, like Father, like Son, Generous inside and out, true from start to finish. (The Message)

Observations- God came in Jesus Christ to reveal Himself in the clearest way possible. He would be fully human like us to show us the way to the Father. If we want to know the Father, we get to look at His Son. In John 14:9-10 Jesus said to the disciple Philip, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show Him to you? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does His work through me.”

Application- What a comfort and a challenge to know that we have a God who chose to enter into human history for us in this most profound way in Jesus Christ! It comforts us by communicating the full extent to which the Father would go to restore the broken relationship with humanity, and it also challenges us raising such a high standard for us to joyfully live into with His help. I’m grateful God decided to move into our neighborhood and do life with us. Merry Christmas!

Prayer- O Eternal God, Your Word has “pitched a tent” among us in Your one and only Son born Bethlehem. Allow the light of faith, hope, and love to brighten our hearts and shine forth through our thoughts, words, and actions in grateful response to the grace He so generously brings to us as a gift of His amazing, over the top, life changing love. We are grateful this morning for the best gift of all- Jesus Christ has come to be with us, in His name we pray. Amen.

Read Luke 2

Scripture- Luke 2:6-7- While they were there, the time came for Mary to have her baby. She gave birth to her firstborn child, a son, wrapped him snugly, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the guestroom. (Common English Bible)

Observations- There’s a translation issue in verse 7 that changes the ways we see one aspect of the Christmas story. There wouldn’t have been, for instance, any hotels in Bethlehem; instead Joseph and Mary would have gone to a member of their extended family’s home to find shelter and hospitality. Given that it was late when they arrived and most homes had only 1 room, they went to a family member who had a guestroom. It, however, was already being used as was the rest of the house. The animals were usually brought into the house for the night, so a manger would have been in the living room. Joseph and Mary were given the best place available for the birth of their son, God’s Son. It was normal for the poor to wrap their newborns in strips of cloth and place them in feeding troughs, which is why it would be so surprising for the shepherds to find the Messiah like this- just like every other poor child.

Application- God chose to enter into human existence through His very own Son, Jesus Christ, at just the right time and in just the right way, but it was different than most people would have expected. The angels announced to the shepherds while they were in their fields that they were to look for a baby born in the same way every other poor baby in Israel was born, and He would be “the Messiah, the Lord.” Why would a King of Kings come just like any other baby? Why come with such little fanfare? The message to the shepherds and everyone else for the last 2000 years was this: “You- no matter who you are or what you’ve done- will be welcome in the presence of this King. Come and worship Him.”

Prayer- Dear Father, thank You for Jesus, who entered into this life in such an unremarkable and average way. You weren’t hiding; rather You were sending us a clear message about just how accessible this Savior would be to us. Help me live joyfully now and forever in the presence of this King, my King. Amen.

Read Matthew 1-2

Scripture- Matthew 2:7-8- Then Herod called for a private meeting with the wise men, and he learned from them the time when the star first appeared. Then he told them, “Go to Bethlehem and search carefully for the child. And when you find Him, come back and tell me so that I can go and worship Him, too!”

Observations- In the story of the birth of Jesus Luke uses the arbitrary power of Caesar Augustus as a counter point to the different kind of power that enters into the world in Jesus, God's fully human, vulnerable Son. Matthew, however, highlights another political figure, Herod, who would do anything to keep the power he had. The Wise Men showed up looking for Jesus to honor and worship Him. Herod played along, and acted as if that was his goal, too, but Herod represents the dark side of the Christmas story by being so threatened and paranoid that he had all the little boys in Bethlehem aged 2 or under killed. Herod chose to worship at the altar of protecting his own hold on power, but the only reason we would ever remember him today is because of his connection to Jesus.

Application- The Wise Men came to worship a King. Herod, filled with evil, chose not to worship the new King, but to attempt to destroy Him. As a result of his desire to protect his limited power, he destroyed his very own soul. The fact is we will become more like whatever we choose to worship. The Wise Men came and humbly knelt before a baby, the one and only Son of God, bringing the best gifts they could imagine, but Herod refused to bend his knee to worship anyone other than himself. We have a choice, and our choice matters here and now and for all eternity. Who or what will we worship? Philippians 2:10-11 says, "At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." The proper response- given all He has done for us- is worship, so how will you bend your knee on behalf of Jesus Christ today?

Prayer- Loving God, and faithful Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we love You and thank You for sending Jesus Christ into this world, even though there were people who wanted to cause Him harm. He came for us- to be the full expression of Your love, and so we are grateful and know that He deserves our humble worship. Help us find ways to honor, serve, and worship Jesus as our Lord all the time, not just when we intentionally gather together for worship with others. You are worthy of all my worship and praise, and I pray to be a conduit of Your amazing grace today, in Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Read Luke 1

Scripture- Luke 1:29, 34, 38- Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.” Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her.

Observations- When the angel Gabriel showed up, may listened carefully. Even though she was “confused and disturbed,” she didn’t runaway; instead she received the encouragement of the angel to not be afraid. When Mary wasn’t quite getting what Gabriel was talking about or how it was going to work out, she asked an appropriate question. Mary’s wonderment wasn’t impertinent or demanding; rather it represented faith seeking understanding. When she understood enough, Mary responded with joyful obedience ready for the new adventure God had in store for her.

Application- In many ways Mary could be considered the “first follower of Jesus,” for she provides us with an example of what it looks like to submit to His Lordship and leadership. She was rightfully confused and disturbed, but moved through this natural response to receive faith and trust. Mary also gives us a wonderful example of the difference between appropriate and inappropriate questions as it concerns God, and then she stepped forward in obedience to God’s unique call on her life. God would reveal more to her later. The fact is we, too, will at times experience being confused and disturbed on our journey of faith, even as we trust God and ask questions for further clarification. We may not get the answers we seek, but God will respond to help us take the next right step.

Prayer- Dear God, thank You for sending Jesus Christ, Your Son, to be our Savior and Leader! Help me remember He came not to make my life easier, but to help me be faithful to His call in my life. Make me more and more qualified and able for the work of Your Kingdom as I grow in Your grace and love. Thanks for listening and responding to my appropriate questions in the midst of my times of being confused and disturbed. Let me say with Mary that I am Your servant, and You can have Your will be done in me. Guide Your church to be faithful in our unique time and place! Amen.

Read Ephesians 2

Scripture- Ephesians 2:8-10- God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.

Observations- Paul was addressing the believers in the church at Ephesus to remind them of the power of God’s grace in their individual lives and their life together as the Body of Christ. Yes, God wants followers of Jesus to do good works, but not as expressions of their religiosity or natural goodness; instead we get to do good works purely in response to the free gift of God’s grace in Jesus Christ. It won’t earn us any extra brownie points or serve as a way to “require” God to love us any more than He already does, but it is our way of saying “Thank You!” to Jesus for all He’s done for us already and what He will continue to do for, in, and through us in the future.

Application- It’s so hard to comprehend that we are forgiven, redeemed, made new, and are freely placed by God in the position of holiness before Him. We cry out “But God, You don’t understand, I still have such a long way to go to be anything like Jesus!” But God understands completely, which is why Jesus offers us the gift of Himself to make up the difference between where we are right now and the perfection of the Father. We are (present tense!) God’s masterpiece not because we have earned such status with good behavior or because we’re doing pretty well compared to a lot of other people we could point to, but because we choose to accept the gift that God has declared it to be so in Jesus Christ. Since it’s already true that we are God’s masterpiece, we are released from the pressure and anxiety of having to earn our salvation. We are reed to joyfully become who God already sees us to be in His grace. Are we in the process of learning to see ourselves the way God sees us?

Prayer- Thank You, God, for the free gift of grace that You so lovingly wrapped in Jesus for us to gratefully receive. Help me say “Yes!” in new ways everyday, so my faith keeps growing and deepening as I see life with You as a great adventure. Help us be a church where Your grace reigns supreme and people feel the love of Christ bursting out all over the place! Smile upon me today, so that I can give Your smile away to others in need of Your love. Amen.

Scripture- Acts 3:24-26- “Starting with Samuel, every prophet spoke about what is happening today. You are the children of those prophets, and you are included in the covenant God promised to your ancestors. For God said to Abraham, ‘Through your descendants all the families on earth will be blessed.’ When God raised up His servant, Jesus, He sent him first to you people of Israel, to bless you by turning each of you back from your sinful ways.”

Observations- God healed, through Peter and John, a man who had been crippled since birth, and this paved a way for Peter to share the story of Jesus with the people who experienced this miracle. The healing was important, but the main thing this accomplished was to gain a hearing for the Good News. Jesus was the gift from God, the Messiah and Savior, that the people of Israel had been so eagerly awaiting for many years. They were often times disobedient, even though God was faithful to His covenant (agreement) with them. One of the ways the Father wrapped the gift of His one and only Son was in prophecy, and He sent Jesus to be with and for them (and us!) at just the right time. The Father sought nothing less than the transformation of His people in the power of the Holy Spirit through Christ. He still does.

Application- Peter was bold, firm, and crystal clear in his message that day, because of the personal transformation he had already experienced: "You rejected this holy, righteous one and instead demanded the release of a murderer. You killed the author of life, but God raised Him from the dead. And we are witnesses of this fact!" (Acts 3:14-15) We must remember that the cross always looms large over the proceedings of Christmas; that is, it's good to picture the cross near the manger. The birth of Jesus is given its meaning and power not as an isolated incident in human history, but through the confirmation that He was (and now is!) the full expression of the Father's love in His life, death, and resurrection. As we say "Yes!" to the ways Jesus wants to bless us with the gift of Himself and a personal relationship that constantly leads to new life, we in turn get to be a blessing to others who stand in need of His amazing grace.

Prayer- Dear God, one of the key ways You have come to bless me is to "turn me back from my sinful ways," but I am slow to understand Your love and I too often give into the powerful lure of temptation that is so strong. It's me, O Lord, standing in the need of prayer and Your forgiveness, so come quickly to redeem me! Help us move from our sin toward Your glorious grace, so that we can be bold, firm, and crystal clear in the way we share Jesus with others in our lives. Lord, give us holy boldness to proclaim with great joy who Jesus is and what He has done for us as Your free gift of grace. The Word made flesh has moved into our neighborhood to do life with us. Amen.

Read Jude 1

Scripture- Jude 1:24-25- Now all glory to God, who is able to keep you from falling away and will bring you with great joy into His glorious presence without a single fault. All glory to Him who alone is God, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord. All glory, majesty, power, and authority are His before all time, and in the present, and beyond all time! Amen.

Observations- I love the way Jude starts out the letter by identifying himself as a “slave of Jesus Christ and a brother of James,” for this means he made no claim to being an earthly brother of Jesus; instead he focused on the way Jesus was now his Lord and Savior, the One he would gladly serve as a slave. Jude was deeply concerned that some folks in churches were treating the free gift of God’s grace as license to do as they pleased. The problem was that what was pleasing to them wasn’t pleasing to God! In his closing prayer, Jude identifies Jesus alone as God, unlimited by time, and willing and able to fulfill His promise of bringing us into the presence of the Father “without a single fault.”

Application- Have you ever treated God’s grace as a license to whatever you felt like doing, even though you were already confident it wasn’t what God would want you to do? If that’s ever the case for us, then the Book of Jude can serve to rein us in and turn us around. If we really believe God’s ultimate goal is for us to stand in His presence “without a single fault,” then it’s best for us to begin now in this life; that is, salvation in and through Jesus Christ is God’s free gift to us and being engaged in a process of discipleship (lifelong learning with Jesus) is our gift back to God. Do we have to work on our immoral thoughts, words, and deeds? Perhaps that’s not the most helpful way to consider our life with Him and one another. We get to draw closer to God as we offer more and more of ourselves to Him, and we practice sinning less now in anticipation of one day being sinless when we stand in God’s “glorious presence.”

Prayer- Dear Lord, thank You for offering me the best gift of all in the salvation and friendship of Jesus Christ. Thank You for the first time I was able to receive that gift, and help me remember I get to keep receiving such an incredible gift everyday by growing closer to You. My thoughts, words, and deeds are hardly holy enough to be crowding Jesus, and I look forward to the day when I will be sinless and fully alive in Your perfect and eternal presence. In the meantime help me walk with You as I learn how to sin less. Guide Your church to do battle with the forces of apathy and evil that threaten to keep us from loving and serving You and others. Scripture- Jeremiah 31:31-33- “The day is coming,” says the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah. This covenant will not be like the one I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand and brought them out of the land of Egypt. They broke that covenant, though I loved them as a husband loves his wife,” says the Lord. “But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day,” says the Lord. “I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people."

Observations- Jeremiah prophesied to the chosen people of God that as a result of their extensive, long-term disobedience hard times were on the way. They would be conquered by the Babylonian kingdom (587-86 B.C.) and many people would be forced into exile and still others would be left behind in abject poverty with limited opportunities for things to get immediately better. They were not, however, to abandon all hope, for the day would come when Jerusalem would again shine brightly for their God and they would be faithful followers of the Lord. The Law and Grace of God would freely and joyfully be received and written on their hearts. This didn't, however, come in the form of political salvation, but in the form of Jesus Christ, fully human and fully God, coming for His people.

Application- We can know the words on the pages of the Bible like the back of our hand, but not have those words etched into our hearts. It has been said that the longest journey we will ever need to make is from our heads to our hearts with the Gospel. The goal is for the words of the Bible to leap off the page and come alive in us, not because we must comply with those words out of a sense of obligation, but because we want to and get to live with and for Jesus Christ, our Leader and Forgiver. In the midst of all of our mess ups, we have a God who is faithful and keeps wooing us to be fully in love and totally committed to doing life with Him. Are God's words continually being written on your heart?

Prayer- Dear Father, thank You for putting Your Word in our minds and in our hearts. Thank You for sending Jesus as the Word made flesh, who moved into the neighborhood to do life with us! Thank You for the work of Your Holy Spirit to move Your words from the pages of the Bible and into mind, so they can be etched into my heart in ways that help me experience Your comfort and confidence, so that I am ready for the challenges You send my way. I pray for those who are not feeling Your presence in their lives right now, but need to know the depth of Your amazing love for them. Guide us to be Your Church in this place at this time in history, in the strong name of Jesus. Amen.

P. S. - Weekly Community Dinner Tonight- we serve a spaghetti dinner in the Social Hall on Sunday evenings from 5:00-6:00pm. It's open to everyone. This weekly meal is an opportunity for us to reach out to people living in the neighborhood around the church as well as a time for fellowship among church members, so please wear your nametags! The meals are free although donations are gladly accepted. There will be no community spaghetti dinner on Christmas or New Years - after tonight, we'll resume January 8.

Prayer Service Tonight- join us in the Chapel this evening at 6:00pm as we focus on Jesus as our light and peace. Enjoy Christmas music and stand in the gap for those in need of God's power. Anointing for spiritual, emotional and physical healing will be offered to those who desire it.

Read 1 Peter 1

Scripture- 1 Peter 1:23-25- For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God. As the Scriptures say, “People are like grass; their beauty is like a flower in the field. The grass withers and the flower fades. But the word of the Lord remains forever.” And that word is the Good News that was preached to you.

Observations- The Father invited the Son to enter into an existence where He would be a person- a person who would fade wither, fade, and die like all other human beings. The Son freely agreed to let go of eternal life in heaven with the Father to enter into our existence for us, so that we could experience the new life that leads to our salvation- both here and now in this life and there and then forever in heaven with God when we die.

Application- This salvation was a call to holy living for Peter, who saw the implications of this gift: “So think clearly and exercise self-control. Look forward to the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires.” (1 Peter 1:13-14a) How are we living into the reality of our salvation? Is there evidence of the grace we have received in how we love and serve God and our neighbor? If not, what needs to change?

Prayer- (a prayer by Henri Nouwen) “Dear God, I am full of wishes, full of desires, full of expectations. Some of them may be realized, many may not, but in the midst of all my satisfactions and disappointments, I hope in You. I know that You will never leave me alone and will fulfill Your divine promises. Even when it seems that things are not going my way, I know that they are going Your way and that, in the end, Your way is the best way for me. O Lord, strengthen my hope, especially when my many wishes are not fulfilled. Let me never forget that your name is Love. Amen.”

“You love Him even though you have never seen Him. Though you do not see Him now, you trust Him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy. The reward for trusting Him will be the salvation of your souls.” (1 Peter 1:8-9),

P. S. - Worship With Us Christmas Day- We'll come together for one, special service at 10:00am in the Sanctuary. Childcare for ages 2 & under only will be in Room S-1 & 2. Children are welcome to come in their pajamas and they are invited to bring a toy as we will have a prayer of blessing over gifts and toys. We’ll sing carols and have a Christmas message from Rev.
